Dragon Boat Festival (龍 船 賽) is one of the fastest growing team water sports in
the world, and traces its history to China more than two centuries ago.

More importantly, it is a national festival to commemorate a great patriot and poet, Qu Yuan (屈 原), for his righteousness to protest against government corruption. The villagers believed that Qu Yuan drowned in the Mi Lo River (汨 羅 江) on the fifth day of the fifth month on the lunar calendar. They beat drums, thrashed the water with paddles and threw rice dumplings called “zongzi" (粽 子) in the river to appease the water
dragons. Thus was born the sport of dragon boat racing. It became an annual event to honor Qu Yuan. The Festival reminds people of the importance of loyalty and commitment
to the community and country.

Today, dragon boat racing events take place all over the world, including the United States. The Dragon Boat Festival celebrates its traditional origin while providing a entertaining and exciting experience for all who participate. It gives the observer an opportunity to glimpse
a part of the rich Chinese cultural heritage.
